GKY, an established water resources engineering, policy & planning, and environmental services consulting firm in Virginia, is currently seeking to add a GIS Specialist/Field Services Lead to its growing northern Virginia practice in the water resources arena. This position will be based in GKY’s Chantilly, Virginia office.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will provide technical assistance for our water resources projects. Many of our projects serve public sector clients, which requires a high level of service and quality. If you are a detail-oriented, highly motivated individual, this is an opportunity to grow professionally through the execution of the following roles and responsibilities for this position:

Provide assistance and leadership in environmental field services and regulatory compliance consulting including:

  • Lead GKY’s corporate GIS goals and initiatives, including but not limited to the following:
    • Establish and apply policies and procedures to GIS data for routine quality control and quality assurance audits to ensure data accuracy and integrity
    • Upon request, respond to inquiries for technical stormwater management information such as maps, summary tables, reports, and infrastructure data
    • Provide training and technical support to personnel on the use of GIS applications, design, or other mapping requirements
    • Review GIS and database work products prepared for water resources projects to ensure their accuracy and compatibility with existing GIS data
    • Evaluate new/developing technologies and software packages
    • Develop drainage areas for SWM BMP facilities and MS4 regulated outfalls
  • Field services team lead for stormwater infrastructure inspections, investigations, and reporting
  • Bathymetric surveys
  • Stormwater sampling and analysis

Required Qualifications:

  • 3 to 8 years of experience with field data collection
  • Strong proficiency with GIS, data analysis, and application development
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • BA/BS in geography or environmental science related field
  • GIS Certificate and/or GIS Professional Certificate
  • Ability to clearly communicate, both orally and in writing
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Ability and desire to perform fieldwork in difficult terrain and year-round weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Authorized to work in the United States

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Clean Water Act programming compliance and implementation, with specific experience with MS4 and TMDL programming
  • Experience reading site plans and facility design details
  • Experience with stormwater sampling techniques and protocols
  • Experience working with local government
  • DEQ Stormwater Management (SWM) Inspector certification
  • DCR Nutrient Management Planning (NMP) certification
  • Confined space entry (CSE) training and experience
  • Develop GIS applications to support stormwater management activities
  • Experience with boating and operating a vehicle with a trailer
  • Experience with automatic sampling equipment
