National Performance Protocols for Stream Restoration for National Academies

The Situation

A lack of standardized protocols is one reason why only an estimated 10% of stream restoration sites are monitored nationwide. To help raise this percentage, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) engaged GKY to help provide guidance on restoration protocols.

The Solution

GKY gathered information via several channels. First, we conducted an email survey of all 50 state departments of transportation to collect information on existing stream restoration monitoring programs and methods of assessing these projects’ performance. Next, our team compiled the results along with information on protocols used by resource and regulatory agencies in collecting performance data on stream restoration projects.

We also conducted an extensive literature search to find stream restoration procedures promoted as stormwater best management practices. Our completed study therefore provided comprehensive information on stream monitoring protocols currently used by states across the U.S., along with detailed case studies to highlight these protocols. We also provided technical recommendations and guidance on development of future protocols and the planning of monitoring programs.
